Mobile App HackathonAlex Gaber on June 30, 2014

On June 20th-21st over a hundred mobile app developers descended upon the AT&T Foundry in Plano, Texas for a Mobile App Hackathon focused on Public Safety mobile apps. Hackathons are always exciting because after just two days of coding, functional and useful prototypes are built. With the theme of Public Safety, the ideas for mobile apps served a greater purpose that made this a truly inspiring event. The event kicked off on Friday evening with some excellent speakers, including the creator of the top selling mobile app “A Dark Room.”

Mobile App Success WorkshopOn Saturday morning at 10am, alongside the hackathon, Crittercism ran a two hour technical training entitled “Mobile App Success Workshop.” The class provided the attendees with a tutorial style environment with hands-on walk-throughs for two different mobile app developer tools. We provided a walk-through of the AT&T Application Resource Optimizer (ARO), as well as Crittercism Mobile Application Performance Management (mAPM).

As the developers were coding as quickly as possible up until the very last minute, Alex Donn of the AT&T Developer Program was hard at work cooking chicken wings to provide extra energy.

The demo presentations were phenomenal, with mobile apps using various APIs that led to some unique and valuable solutions. For any of these apps, when being used for public safety efforts, the need to monitor the app for uptime and reliability is crucial. Any mobile app that is used in critical situations must have consistent performance, where examples of fire fighters using mobile apps to assist in fire-fighting cannot crash or be sluggish. Full event recap is here.
